DESCRIPTION

DescriptionTent City is in the centre. When construction started in August 1929 there was a massive number of people arriving looking for work. Mount Isa's population exploded from around 600 in April to well over 2000 by September, all looking for work. There was no accommodation available. Mount Isa Mines erected a large number of tents. These were rented to the workers. These remained housing and were modified by the owners into what was called "tent houses". The large cleared area towards the left top is the areodrome.
